Before Solo Leveling made its debut in the animated form, everyone was skeptical about it. Fans were concerned about the visual quality of the show and wondered whether the studio would be able to give a faithful adaptation to the original webtoon or not. And guess what, upon its release, it exceeded all expectations and shattered multiple records with its first episode.
Now that the anime is coming to an end, fans are searching for similar shows to fill the void left by their favorite series. Luckily, the world of anime has a variety of titles with similar themes and qualities as Solo Leveling. In this article, we will explore some of the best anime like Solo Leveling. So, without further ado, let’s get started.
10. Shangri-La Frontier
One of the best anime to come out in Winter 2024, Shangri-La Frontier is another flashy action-packed anime like Solo Leveling. Set in a world where VR games are all the rage, veteran player Rakuro Hizutome prides himself on conquering the trashiest games on the market under the alias, Sunraku.
However, his life takes an unexpected turn when he sets out to conquer the virtual reality RPG “Shangri-La Frontier”, which hides more beneath its surface than the usual video game secrets. Solo Leveling fans will be in for a treat with Sunraku’s unorthodox playthrough and brilliantly executed fast-paced fights in the anime.
9. Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic
Magi and Solo Leveling share a similar theme of dungeons and magic beasts inhabiting their narrative. The series initially follows young magician Aladdin who wanders around the world in search of his true self. However, his journey is not a lonely one, as he is accompanied by his friend and mentor Ugo – a summoned jinn.
In his travels, he also befriends Alibaba Saluja and with this newfound friendship, they begin an epic adventure across the world, witnessing various irregularities that seem more frequent than ever. Aladdin is somewhat of a spitting image of Jinwoo in the sense that they both can easily overpower their opponent.
8. Overlord
Acclaimed as one of the most popular transferred to game world anime, Overlord leans fully into RPG concepts, making it a must-watch for Solo Leveling fans. The story chronicles Momonga, a powerful wizard who is trapped in the world of the popular virtual reality game “Yggdrasil” after the servers shut down.
With the magic at his disposal and cosmic items under his control, Momonga decides to take on the role of his character, Ainz Ooal Gown and begins exploring the world in an attempt to figure out the befallen catastrophe. To become part of the “game system” is something both series protagonists can relate to.
7. Goblin Slayer
Moving on to another fantasy anime like Solo Leveling which is set entirely in a fictional realm colonized by monsters and magicians. Goblin Slayer is about the unnamed titular character who is determined to wipe the race of goblins ever since he watched his sister taken advantage of and killed by them.
Acting like an emotionless robot born for slaughtering goblins with extreme prejudice, this warrior won’t rest until his mission is fulfilled! Both Goblin Slayer and Solo Leveling have a ranking system for adventurers/hunters, and the main character is a lone wolf in both series.
6. Engage Kiss
Known for its harem anime elements, Engage Kiss is worth a try even though it’s way off-beat than high-profile anime like Solo Leveling. Just like the hit webtoon, the series is set around the theme of monster hunting with the protagonist Shu Ogata having special powers to slay deadly creatures.
Shu, along with his half-demon ally Kisara and his ex-lovers, earns a living by hunting demons in Bayron City. However, his motives go beyond just money as he is determined to uncover the truth behind the D-Hazard incident, which occurred many years ago, and resulted in the disappearance of his parents and sister.
5. Sword Art Online
Over the years, Sword Art Online has invested heavily in exploring the elements of virtual reality gaming through anime media. First evolved as a light novel, the series presents a string of various virtual reality MMORPG worlds set in motion with the story of young beta tester Kazuto “Kirito” Kirigaya.
As a fan of RPG-centred shows, Solo Leveling fans should not miss out on the colourful storyboard of Sword Art Online. Besides, both series show an otherwise ordinary young man diving into the brutal world of fantasy action, and the two are also produced by the same animation studio, i.e. A-1 Pictures.
4. Rising Of The Shield Hero
Rising of the Shield Hero is one of the pioneers who established the isekai genre among modern anime fans. It tells the story of Naofumi Iwatani who was once an ordinary young man until he got dragged into the violent world of fighting fantasy monsters with the designated title of the “Shield Hero”.
Now, coming to the similarities between Solo Leveling and Shield Hero. Both Jinwoo and Naofumi are initially underdogs but work their way up in response to their dangerous surroundings. Plus, both the series are fairly similar in premise with monsters from parallel dimensions attacking their world.
3. Unwanted Undead Adventurer
Based on a dark fantasy novel, Unwanted Undead Adventurer stars monster slayer Rentt Faina as he faces his own mortality after a mysterious force magically resurrects him in skeleton form following his demise in the mouth of a dragon in a dungeon raid.
As he strives to achieve Existential Evolution and rejoin the land of the living, he faces several challenges in order to get what he wants! Rentt is forced to start over from the bottom, which makes him an endearing dark horse just like Sung Jinwoo in Solo Leveling.
2. Arifureta
Arifureta: From Commonplace to World’s Strongest is a dark and gritty isekai anime by White Fox known for its violent and gory narrative. The story explores the journey of high-schooler Hajime Nagumo, an average otaku who gets transported to a fantasy world with the rest of his class to fight monsters.
Stuck only with a basic crafting skill, Hajime vows to escape the monster-infested abyss anyhow. Using the “system” to their own advantage is something common in both Arifureta and Solo Leveling. Both the main characters are weak and cowardly at the beginning but gradually become stronger and more confident.
1. Tower Of God
Originally originating as a South Korean anime like Solo Leveling, Tower of God is also a prolific webtoon turned anime series that’s heavily praised for its wide aspects of fantasy elements including rich world-building, character exploration, fight build-up, and a story featuring several battle royale scenarios.
The series is about a young boy Bam who follows his only friend Rachel to a mysterious Tower. Legends say that if you manage to climb to the top of the tower, any wish will be granted. Like Jinwoo, Bam decides to go any distance to see Rachel again even if it means carrying the brunt of the burden on his shoulders.
