With a new body temperature sensor focused on women’s health, and improved crash detection, the Apple Watch Series 8 renews Apple’s focus on health and well-being.
Unveiled overnight at Apple’s Far Out event in California, the three new Apple smartwatches all feature crash detection which takes advantage of an advanced “sensor-fusion” algorithm which leverages the more powerful gyroscope and accelerometer. The feature also uses the barometer, GPS and microphone on an iPhone as inputs to detect the unique patterns which can indicate that a severe crash has occurred.
If the watch detects a severe car crash, it can automatically dial emergency services if the wearer remains unresponsive after a 10-second countdown. Emergency responders will receive the wearer’s device location, which is also shared with the their emergency contacts.
Meanwhile, the Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch Ultra also feature new temperature-sensing capabilities. One temperature sensor is on the back of the watch against the wearer’s skin, while a second sensor is in the front display, allowing the watch to account for the temperature of the environment.
The sensors measure the wrist temperature every five seconds during sleep, detecting changes as small as 0.1° C. In the Health app, users can see nightly shifts in baseline temperature, which can be caused by exercise, jet lag or illness.
The temperature-sensing capabilities also offer women further information about their ovulation cycles and period predictions, which can help with family planning.
Additionally, with iOS 16 and watchOS 9, all Cycle Tracking users can receive a notification if their logged cycle history shows a possible deviation, such as irregular, infrequent or prolonged periods and persistent spotting, which can be symptoms of underlying health conditions.
Apple Watch Ultra
The Apple Watch Ultra introduces a larger 49 mm titanium case and features the biggest and brightest Apple Watch display to date. It also provides the best battery life of any Apple Watch, reaching up to 36 hours during normal use.
The Wayfinder watch face is designed specifically for the larger Apple Watch Ultra display and includes a compass built into the dial, with space for up to eight complications.
Apple Watch Series 8 starts at $629 and Apple Watch SE at $399. They are available to order today, with availability beginning Friday 16 September. The Apple Watch Ultra starts at $1299 and is also available to order today, with availability beginning Friday 23 September.
