With major upgrades to Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency mode, plus longer battery life, the Apple AirPods Pro 2 carve out some peace and quiet to offer more immersive listening.
Unveiled overnight at Apple’s Far Out event in California, the AirPods Pro 2 feature a new low-distortion audio driver and custom amplifier, to offer richer bass and clearer sound across a wider range of frequencies. The earbuds pack Apple’s new H2 chip for improved onboard processing, cancelling twice as much noise over the previous generation AirPods Pro released in 2019.
The H2 chip also supports new “Adaptive” Transparency, designed to selectively let in some noise from the outside world, so listeners can remain aware of their surroundings. Adaptive Transparency can reduce loud environmental noise — such as sirens, construction tools and loud music – while still allowing the wearer to hear voices.
When it comes to sound quality, the Apple AirPods Pro 2 introduce Personalised Spatial Audio. Using the iPhone’s TrueDepth camera, users can create a personal profile of their ears for Spatial Audio to deliver a finely-tuned listening experience. The earbuds also come with a new extra small silicone ear tip.
New touch controls enables quick volume adjustments with a light swipe up or down on the stem of an earbud.
The Apple AirPods Pro 2 extend the battery life by 1.5 hours, for a total of up to six hours with Active Noise Cancellation. The carry case can hold four additional chargers, to provide 30 hours of total listening time. Along with support for wireless charging, the case sticks with a Lightning charge port rather than USB-C.
The charge case now features an anchor for attaching a lanyard. Apple has also added a speaker, making it easier to locate the case using Apple’s Find My, plus each earbud can individually play a sound when lost.
The AirPods Pro (2nd generation) will sell for $399, available for order on Friday 9 September, with in-store availability beginning Friday 23 September.
