JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure by renowned manga artist Hirohiko Araki is a staple in the anime community. Running for over three decades, the series has had such a significant cultural impact on otaku culture that a Thai drama series used its characters to reveal the sexuality of its male lead.
In an episode of the Thai drama “Miracle of Teddy Bear”, the lead character, Nut, is revealed to be gay. However, the way this revelation is conveyed is both hilarious and surprising—it happens through a JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure reference.
The drama employs a rack focus on two JoJo figurines, Josuke Higashikata and Rohan Kishibe, as a character realizes that the male lead is gay. Ironically, these two JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure characters are unlikely to get together in the original series.
A social media user humorously commented on the scene, saying, “I like that either the set designer/scriptwriter was counting on the audience to know about JoJo and the culture surrounding it, or they just looked at it and thought, ‘Yep, those are the kind of anime figures a gay man would have.’”
Veteran fans of the series know that Josuke Higashikata, the illegitimate son of Joseph Joestar, and mangaka Rohan Kishibe are polar opposites who despise each other. However, the Thai drama seems to have taken creative liberty, implying that these characters embody LGBTQ+ culture.
As for the plot of “Miracle of Teddy Bear”, it’s a boys’ love drama that follows a young man named Nut, who owns what appears to be an ordinary teddy bear named Tofu. However, Tofu mysteriously comes to life and transforms into a human—with no memory of his past.
