Manga Artist Loses Her Cool After Hairdresser Mentions Mangamura

Piracy, a major threat to the entertainment and media industry, results in billions of dollars in losses for multinational corporations. Japan’s anime and manga industry, along with the hardworking artists behind it, suffers significant revenue losses due to piracy, yet few people genuinely acknowledge its impact.

Recently, seasoned manga artist Nekota Yukari shared an X/Twitter post recounting an incident where she lost her composure after a hairdresser cutting her hair casually mentioned the infamous pirate website, Mangamura.

The author wrote: “To hairdressers: You should not tell your customers how inconvenient it is that Mangamura is gone. The person cutting your hair right now may be a manga artist.” Yukari’s post has since garnered around 8 million views, with many users finding humor in the situation.

For those unaware, Mangamura was Japan’s most notorious manga piracy website, hosting popular series such as Naruto, One Piece, and Bleach. Launched in January 2016 by Romi Hoshino, the site skyrocketed in popularity in 2017, amassing an astounding 100 million visits in a single month.

In 2017, Kodansha and several other publishers filed a criminal complaint against Mangamura for violating Japan’s copyright laws. According to the Content Overseas Distribution Association (CODA), the site caused approximately ¥319.2 billion (US$2.13 billion) in damages to copyright holders.

Following intervention by the Japanese government in April 2018, measures were introduced to block access to piracy sites, leading Mangamura to shut down permanently. In June 2021, the court sentenced the website’s owner to three years in prison and ordered them to pay ¥1.7 billion (US$11.34 million) to Japanese publishers Shogakukan, Shueisha, and Kadokawa—a payment that remains outstanding.

As for Nekota Yukari, she is currently working on her ongoing slice-of-life manga, “Knitter’s High”, which follows a boys’ high school handcrafts club. She has also previously authored the action-mystery manga “Sakura Taboo” and “The Big Bee”.
