Fans of atmospheric, philosophical storytelling have reason to celebrate as Yuki Urushibara, the visionary behind the beloved supernatural series Mushishi, has officially launched her latest manga, Suiheisen no Nella (Nella of the Horizon).
Announced by Kodansha in their prestigious Monthly Afternoon magazine, the series marks Urushibara’s first major work since Mushishi concluded in 2008, reigniting excitement among manga enthusiasts and critics alike.
Known for her lyrical pacing, lush natural landscapes, and themes exploring humanity’s relationship with the unseen, Urushibara has long been revered for her ability to merge the eerie with the profound. Her absence from the manga scene has only heightened anticipation for her return.
Suiheisen no Nella – Plot

Set in a seaside town, Suiheisen no Nella follows Minagi, a young girl living with her fisherman grandfather. One day, during a powerful tide, she encounters a mysterious blue-eyed young man named Nagi, who claims to be searching for a mermaid. Years later, Nagi reappears before Minagi, looking exactly the same as before. On another fateful night of a great tide, Minagi is drawn into the sea as if guided by an unseen force.
Unlike traditional manga, this series will be published irregularly as a series of short stories, starting with a striking 110-page full-color opening chapter, offering a fresh take on narrative delivery.
Urushibara’s previous work, ‘Mushishi,’ ran from 1999 to 2008 and has sold over 3.8 million copies, earning awards like the Kodansha Manga Award. Given this success, ‘Suiheisen no Nella’ is anticipated to continue Urushibara’s tradition of blending folklore, mystery, and human-nature relationships, appealing to both existing fans and new readers.
