Crunchyroll has released a brand new special documentary of “Solo Leveling” giving a quick tour into the series’ journey from the print media to the now massively popular anime adaptation. Fortunately, A-1 Pictures has done justice to the webtoon thus far however, if it weren’t for the production decision, the project would have been assigned to a different studio.
The two-episode special documentary titled “The Leveling of Solo Leveling” features an interview with the CEO of Solo Leveling webtoon publisher D&C Media Choi Won-Yeong in which he revealed that several studios were keen on adapting the anime series of the hit webtoon.
Choi Won-Yeong said, “For Solo Leveling, we received offers from many different studios. From all of those, we chose Aniplex”. REDICE Studio, who is responsible for developing Solo Leveling webtoon art, then highlighted Aniplex’s “great production system” which led them to make the decision.
As a result, Aniplex’s subsidiary A-1 Pictures took on the Solo Leveling anime project and worked together with REDICE to ensure the animation was accurate, with character design based on the original webtoon and everything needing to be approved by the publishing company D&C Media.
Solo Leveling documentary also provides a behind-the-scenes look at the adaptation process and director Shunsuke Nakashige’s role in elevating the source material by adding anime-only scenes. The director first interviewed staff and original author Chugong and then developed a story around the characters.
Additionally, producer Sota Furuhashi commented on Crunchyroll’s contribution to tailoring the series’ success. “With Crunchyroll, they’ve been a huge help in regards to the localization efforts”, he quoted. In a previous statement, Crunchyroll CEO Rahul Purini revealed that they were the first to pitch the series to Aniplex to have it adapted.
Available exclusively on Crunchyroll, this two-part docuseries takes viewers on a journey to Korea and Japan, featuring insights from the teams at D&C Media, REDICE Studio, Aniplex, and A-1 Pictures, shedding light on the transition of Solo Leveling from text to art.
