Not a day passes without the mention of One Piece and as the anime has entered the Egghead arc, the debates and controversies have begun to spark in the community once again. This time, some fans of the series aren’t happy with the latest episode of the anime which picturizes a certain 12-year-old character in an explicit state.
The character in focus is one of the “Worst Generation” pirates, Jewelry Bonney who recently made her screen apperance in One Piece Episode 1090 after a long time. Many viewers praised the new animation style of the episode but what led to a war of words was a bath scene involving Bonney which wasn’t something fans liked.
The fanbase wasn’t too happy with Toei Animation’s decision to animate the scene and the reason behind this is the fact that Bonney is only 12 years old. Even though she looks like a grown-up woman in the scene, her real age is that of a child, and seeing her being sexualized didn’t sit well with a majority of the fans.
As a result, the netizens took to X (formerly Twitter) to share their reactions and criticize the studio for not taking extreme measures, especially when dealing with a character like this. In fact, one of the animators received a ton of backlash on the internet owing to the adaptation of Bonney’s bath scene.
Later, the person in charge stated that he wasn’t aware of the character’s age while animating this scene. Yet, many users filled the animator’s comment section with negative and abusive messages. However, there were supporters as well who sided with the animator for doing his job and acknowledged his work.
What is Bonney’s Devil Fruit?
The biggest reason behind the One Piece fanbase getting divided on this topic is due to the majority of the haters being in the dark about Bonney’s devil fruit. The anime only’s are still unaware of the situation while the manga community knows too much about the character. Hence, it’s important to understand Bonney’s abilities first.
Jewelry Bonney has access to the powers of Toshi Toshi no Mi which allows her to age herself and alter her physical appearance accordingly. Although she typically uses her ability to appear as a young woman in her twenties, Bonney is in fact still a little girl, having been 10 years old during her debut and now being twelve after the time skip.
One more thing fans should realize before cursing the production staff is that the animators are only adapting the source material and aren’t creating anything by themselves. So, better appreciate their hard work and watch the ongoing One Piece: Egghead arc which is currently streaming on Netflix worldwide.
