2023 was yet another remarkable and over-achieving year for the anime industry. Many new and sequel anime parts aired throughout the year, but the one which thrived in the race of best anime was Studio Ufotable’s Demon Slayer as it bagged the title of “most watched anime of 2023” in Japan.
Video Research Ltd., a research organization that provides television viewership data, recently released the list of shows that received the highest number of views nationwide for 2023. Based on the overall viewership ratings, the third season of Demon Slayer “Swordsmith Village Arc” topped the chart averaging 15.4 million viewers.
The viewership for Swordsmith Village Arc peaked during the season finale when almost 23 million people tuned in on their televisions to watch the episode in real time. The premiere of Demon Slayer Season 3 also gained remarkable views as it was seen by 21 million individuals at the time of the regional broadcast.
While the third season of Demon Slayer made a mark on the viewership charts in Japan, the special compilation film of “Red Light District Arc” didn’t hold back as well as it averaged 10.3 million viewers and a 22.5 million peak. “Sazae-san” and “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End” ranked 3rd and 4th in the list averaging 9.95 million and 7.94 million views respectively.
Although these reports compile the data from only Japanese households, it’s still quite a phenomenal achievement for Demon Slayer to be listed as the “most viewed anime” for a consecutive third year. Needless to say, the Demon Slayer anime franchise is indisputable in Japan at the moment.
