Streaming giant Netflix never stops surprising us with its new projects and this time it’s the live-action adaptation of the worldwide renowned manga “One Piece”. The highly anticipated series is set to debut this year and even before it has dropped reports surged claiming that One Piece live action budget matches the Game of Thrones franchise.
Since the release of the first trailer, there’s been a lot of discourse on just how big the budget is for Netflix’s attempt at bringing One Piece into live-action. A recent tweet going viral responded to this serious question mentioning that the production budget of a single episode of One Piece live-action is much more than the “Game of Thrones” and “Mandalorian” franchises.
One Piece live action budget is not a cheap undertaking and the claim is pretty big coming from an unofficial source. However, this might be true because a load of the budget has gone into replicating the towns, boats and the cast as close as the original setting with less CGI or VFX use.
Marty Adelstein, the CEO of the studio behind the One Piece live-action, stated in 2017 that the production costs of the show could set a new record in television drama history. In fact, the production designer on One Piece claimed in an interview that their project is on par with what Marvel Studios is producing.
According to Anime News Network and Anime Herald, One Piece live action budget will be as close to $9-10 million per episode which falls short of the speculated claim. Given that the TV series will have eight episodes, it would cost around $100-$150 million in the making of One Piece live-action.
Netflix hasn’t any say on this matter however, in the wake of this level of budget fans can expect high production value from the makers. The trailer is already creating a lot of buzz in the community and it will be interesting to see how the live-action adaptation will turn out. Only time will tell whether it’ll be a success or another failed attempt.
