The new Google Nest Hub 2021 will put you to sleep – literally. It has a unique sleep sensing feature that, if you use it, collects and analyses your sleep data.
The Google Nest Hub 2021 is a Google Assistant speaker that now incorporates the Google Soli motion detection technology that is an option to help you sleep. Google hastens to reassure you that your sleep data is yours – it will not be used for any other purpose.
We will get to what it does and how it works, but one caveat may influence your long-term sleep sensing use. It is free to try in 2021, but Google reserves the right to charge for the service from next year. Talk about making money while you sleep.
Google Nest Hub 2021 sleep sensing
We can tell you more when we review it in the coming weeks. It uses Solli radar motion technology, ambient light sensor and microphone and to analyse sleep patterns from motion, breathing and noise.
At the demonstration, it was quite interesting how good the data is. It closely matches sleep recordings from wearables and dedicated sleep sensors.
Sleep Sensing provides tailored bedtime schedules and personalised suggestions developed by sleep scientists and guidance from organisations like the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. After several nights of analysis, these suggestions point out notable aspects of your sleep, educate you on why they’re important and provide tips to improve.
Each morning it displays how you slept and suggests what you can do to improve that. It can also connect to the Google Fit app so you can incorporate sleep into your overall health regimen. And it will also work with Fitbit devices (aa Google company).
Google Nest Hub 2021 and Google Assistant
This hub is for the bedroom – it has no camera. As is usual, all Google Assistant interactions are logged in your profile and can be accessed and edited or schedules set for deletion. You can get basic smart home functionality out-of-the-box. If you voice match, it can deliver individual results like your calendar, lists and reminders.
Sound
Google says it has 50% more bass than the original for better music, podcasts or audiobooks experiences. It has music services from YouTube Music and Spotify and video Netflix, Disney+ and Stan (subscription required). Quick Gestures means you can pause or play content at any time by tapping the air in front of your display.
