Naruto has been one of the most popular and influential anime worldwide for the past two decades. However, a recent incident in the U.S. has put the series in a negative spotlight, as it involved a man attacking a Tesla station while wearing the iconic headband from the anime TV series.
Adam Matthew Lansky, a 41-year-old man from the United States, was arrested on Tuesday by local police in connection with two separate vandalism incidents at a Tesla dealership, including an alleged Molotov cocktail attack and a shooting.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Oregon, the first incident took place on January 20, when Salem police responded to reports of an individual throwing Molotov cocktails at a Tesla showroom. The suspect was seen wearing an American flag on his arm and dressed in a ninja-style outfit, complete with a Naruto-inspired headband.
Nearly a month later, on February 19, officers were called to the dealership again after someone shot out its windows. After reviewing surveillance footage, authorities linked Lansky to both incidents, according to court documents.
Security footage from the dealership captured the suspect throwing a “Molotov cocktail-style device” at a truck, igniting flames. Additionally, dashcam footage from a patrol car recorded a vehicle parked near the dealership on the night of the shooting, which authorities later confirmed was registered to Lansky.
Lansky now faces a federal charge of illegally possessing an unregistered destructive device. Court documents state that seven vehicles were damaged, with one completely destroyed. Tesla estimates the total cost of the damage to be around $500,000.
The FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), and the Salem Police Department are jointly investigating the case. For now, Lansky remains in custody pending further proceedings, with his arraignment scheduled for April 3.
