The worst thing about being an anime fan is getting awful negative comments when you dislike a specific anime series. Doesn’t matter how detailed you were about your point but, if it’s against the series then get ready to be traumatized by the fanbase. And, in the history of the Japanese anime industry, viewers have come to witness a bunch of toxic anime fandoms.
Toxic fanbases are one of the biggest reasons why non-anime consumers don’t want to start their beautiful journey with a particular series. The negative comments by a bunch of fans label the entire fandom as being toxic and certainly makes an unhealthy environment for others who are willing to be a part of their community.
And, in today’s article, we have covered some of the most toxic anime fandoms in history which are irresistible that include some of the greatest anime of all time. So, without any further ado let’s get started.
Dragon Ball – “Can He Beat Goku Though?”
Dragon Ball franchise is out there since we all were kids and is no doubt one of the best shĹŤnen series which gave rise to some great shows in the future. New-gen manga authors are deeply influenced by the work of Akira Toriyama and for some, he is an inspiration. Moreover, Dragon Ball promoted the culture of anime, not just in Japan, but in the West as well.
So, we all are very well aware of the greatness of this show and the impact of Goku’s ultimate journey on the lives of other people. But, there is an annoying thing about the fanbase of Dragon Ball? “Can he beat Goku though?” – how many times have you heard this line? Probably many, as some kids don’t stop babbling about the greatness of their favorite hero.
Yes, Goku indeed is one of the most superior anime characters and he’s also very popular but that doesn’t mean fans have to compare him with every newly introduced character. But, Dragon Ball fans are good at this and if you will try to counter your personal favorite with Goku then be prepared for their “Super Ultra Instinct Undefeatable Unmatchable” type of comments.
Naruto – “Every New Anime Is Naruto Rip Off”
Masashi Kishimoto created an amazing series like Naruto with concepts like Ninja & Shinobi world. In terms of popularity, Naruto beats any other series which are present at the moment and you cannot disagree with this fact. Great storyline, sensational antagonists and top-notch hand-to-hand combats.
But, all this good quality content comes up with a label of “toxic anime fandoms”. The fans of Naruto just can’t stop talking about the greatness of their show and call every other shonen anime a rip off of Naruto. These are the people who can’t help but call Black Clover, Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen and many other series a Naruto rip off. Several fanbases have experienced the trauma of Narutards and they know how irritating this fandom can be.
My Hero Academia – Ship Lovers
My Hero Academia, such a fancy and peaceful name and we’re pretty sure Horikoshi-san would have given a lot of thought to come up with such a name. But, unfortunately, the fans of My Hero Academia do not give a second of thought before criticising and abusing any other fan who disagrees with their opinion.
Shipping characters is a part of the anime community and is supposed to be done for fun but the toxic yaoi fans of My Hero Academia worsen the situation by taking straight characters, making them gay, and then getting mad at fans because the ship itself isn’t legit or canon. What’s worse is they go as far as making explicit ships that are sickening and paedophilic.
Internet is loaded with fanarts on Deku x All Might and Overhaul x Eri; such a toxic type of shipping takes out the fun and makes it look awful & weird. The fandom of My Hero Academia is a place filled with people who can’t respect other people’s opinions, likes and dislikes. This is just absurd and creeps out any anime watcher.
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure – “Is This A JoJo Reference”
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is a very exciting and intriguing anime series because of its variety of protagonists in each JoJo part. Hirohiko Araki has portrayed the characters in a very fascinating and stylish way which makes it different from other shĹŤnen shows. Also, David Productions did a great job by giving a unique look to the anime series.
Talking about the JoJo fandom, it is more on the annoying side than being toxic and some people hate it. The fanbase just makes a JoJo reference out of everything and creeps out literally every single anime watcher by their repetitive words like “Watch Jojo, Watch Jojo”. This is their daily routine and quite annoying when you’ll ask a new anime fan.
Attack On Titan – Worst Fanbase Ever
The one anime which makes you think that what is the extent of a Japanese cartoon is none other than the worldwide popular, Attack On Titan. This series has shown the world what an anime can do and titles like the most in-demand TV series in the world and the most popular anime on IMDb prove its worth in the entertainment media sector.
But, there is a quick question for you, which is the worst toxic fandom ever in the history of anime? Want an answer, then be grateful to introduce yourself to the loving world of Attack On Titan where everyone is treated equally. A fandom where death threats are given to the voice actors, the creator and the animators working on the show are bullied & criticised each week.
Since, the change in studios of Attack On Titan, a bunch of stupid fans just keep targeting the production staff and animators working in MAPPA. Furthermore, some cursed Hajime Isayama because they were disappointed by the ending, and crossing all the lines some weird fans sent death threats to Gabi’s voice actress because they didn’t like the character. This is just unacceptable and shameful from such a mature fanbase and talking about them is just unbearable.
Demon Slayer – Spoiler Gang
Demon Slayer is new to the anime community as it has been only a couple of years since the anime television series debuted. But, in just a few years, the show has reached remarkable heights in terms of popularity and is one of the best-selling manga with the total manga sales crossing 150 million worldwide.
And, how one can forget about the mind-blowing animation quality of Demon Slayer! There are just no words to describe the beauty of visuals in the anime and it attracts more fans to the series. But, as soon as you enter into the exciting fanbase of Demon Slayer, you get to know how bad things can get.
The fanbase of Demon Slayer is filled with a large group of stubborn kids who likes to spoil everything from the manga. Maybe you just ended up the second season, but fans like to share about the thing which is going to happen in the fourth or fifth season. Spoilers are the first thing you cannot avoid in the fanbase of Demon Slayer and that’s what you should be aware of.
Fullmetal Alchemist – Review Bombing Clan
There aren’t many fabulous manga series written by a female mangaka as the Japanese manga industry is totally dominated by male manga writers. However, Hiromu Arakawa broke this stereotype by penning an incredible story like Fullmetal Alchemist which was adapted into anime series two times.
However, the 2009 released sequel titled ‘Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood’ marked a deep impression on the anime community and became the highest-rated anime on MAL which brings us to the main point. Why downvote other anime just to be at the top? Sounds hilarious, but that’s true.
The series is on the top of MAL for almost a decade and that’s a remarkable milestone. But, what is worst is that whenever an anime series comes close to Fullmetal Alchemist, the fans start review bombing to decrease the ratings of other shows. They just do this to every single anime and this shows the childish behaviour of the fanbase.
One Piece – Forcefully Introduce Others To Fandom
One Piece is a legendary animanga series of all time and there shouldn’t be an argument about a series which is running for over two decades, is comprised of over 1000+ episodes and manga chapters, and has sold over 495 million manga copies becoming the 2nd best-selling comic in the world after DC’s Superman.
Just name one series with so many milestones, there aren’t any and that’s the legacy of Eiichiro Oda’s creation. However, in the last few months, the fanbase of One Piece has gotten involved in the toxic anime fandoms category after a little dispute between One Piece vs Attack On Titan fans over IMDb ratings.
Furthermore, this doesn’t sound toxic but it’s kind of irritating coming from the fans of One Piece, as they try to introduce every new anime fan to the fandom. Their only reply to a question is, just watch or read One Piece. They have to understand not every fan can watch such a long series when they can get a lot of entertainment from others. So, rather than being pushy they should just accept the reality and move on.
