Chloé Zhao is the daughter of a corporate manager and a hospital worker. She was born in Beijing. She claims she was a slacker at school and spent her time making comics for pleasure. Zhao was moved to the United Kingdom at the age of 15 and enrolled in a boarding school before heading out to the United States, where she had the opportunity to be someone different. She told Vogue magazine, “I wanted to be where Michael Jackson was,” since she felt constrained growing up in an ancient society that required her to “be a particular way.”
Her debut film was a Native American drama
Zhao adores the plains, whether they’re in Mongolia, where she spent her youth, or South Dakota, where she shot her first feature film, Songs My Brothers Taught Me. The film portrays the narrative of a rebellious Lakota Sioux youth and his relationship with his younger sister, which was developed at the Sundance Institute workshop and produced by Zhao and actor Forest Whitaker. The film premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival and was then played at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival’s Directors’ Fortnight section.
