Mailguard has warned that Aussies are targets for the Netflix double-paid email scam. An email arrives telling you that your last invoice statement for March 2021 was double paid. Please apply for a refund within 12-hours!
Mailguard says anxious Aussies react like sheep and click on the link to claim the refund. The Netflix double-paid email scam takes them to an authentic-looking webpage where once users’ sign in’ to their accounts, their credentials are harvested, and they are led to a similar page asking for users’ credit card details. But the data harvest goes further by harvesting their mobile phone number is a two-factor authentication scam.
Now the scammers have your Netflix login and password; they can sell that on the Dark Web. They also have your credit card details, including your CVC number and expiry date.
It is not the first time – Netflix is a frequent target for scams as it is in so many Australian homes. This iteration is the most professional yet with exceptionally authentic-looking web pages. The only giveaway is that the email and webpage are from ‘Netlfix’.
It is not dissimilar in style to the Netflix scam email last November that required users to update their payment details. Or the one claiming your account had been locked…
Netflix response
It will never ask you to enter your personal information in a text or email. This includes:
- Credit or debit card numbers
- Bank account details
- Netflix passwords
It will never request payment or make refunds through a 3rd party vendor or website.
If the text or email links to a URL that you don’t recognize, don’t tap or click it. If you did already, do not enter any information on the website that opened.
